Veronica Mars, she's a marshmallow

I totally would have used the best line from the show, "Veronica Mars... is smarter than me," but I already have.

Anyway, if you did not heed my pleas/words of wisdom and watch the reruns over the summer, now's your chance to catch up on the complete first season on DVD! Seriously, you can buy or Netflix it, just get your hands on this box set. Hopefully if you are into pop culture at all you've heard some buzz on the show already -- over the summer a slew of latecomers -- including critics and other notable notables (re: the second link, anyone familiar with Kevin Smith's oeuvre should be prepared for his linguistically colorful high praise) jumped on the bandwagon. With cult masters of storytelling and wit like Messrs. Whedon and Smith among its rapidly expanding fanbase, you should be able to tell this show is less teenybopper drivel and more Instant Television Classic. It's a compelling, extraordinarily well-plotted noir that manages to be truly hilarious and heartbreaking too. There are a lot of Very Bad Things that happen to the (extremely well-written and -performed) characters of VM, but the fact that they don't get sentimental about it (instead, reacting with detachment, cynicism, repression or outright bastardity) allows you to feel for them more.

But, in the words of our friends from Reading Rainbow, don't just take my word for it. Here is Entertainment Weekly's review of the S1 DVDs (check out the byline!) and a very thorough review of the DVD set as well as of the season is here.

So go! I dare you not to consume the second half of the season in less than three days. So far no one I know with access to all the episodes has been able to do it.

P.S. Three episodes of the second season (which is FANTASTIC so far) have already aired... but I would recommend holding off on them until you've seen all of the first season, because the mysteries and character development will unravel much more deliciously that way. I will personally send you my downloaded S2 episodes afterward, if you need them (and you will!).

We just finished watching the pilot episode exactly 12 minutes ago ;)

It was on my 'to watch' list after your first post. I'm slightly ashamed to admit that it was bumped up several spaces on said list after I heard Joss Whedon's comments about it ;) Yea, I'm a fangirl too.

Hey, no shame in aligning your tastes with Joss's. Did you like the pilot? I thought it did a great job kicking off the big season-long mystery arcs and setting the tone for the show. Just a warning -- the next few episodes may seem kind of hit-or-miss, but I think the show really hits its stride around #6 (the election one). But try not to skip around if you can help it -- each episode does drop important clues and developments that build with each subsequent installment.

That's good to know. David has been underwhelmed thus far (and, in fairness, the episode we just watched - Meet John Smith - was not very good), but I've been reassuring him that it will get better ;)

Oh, I forgot to answer your question. Yes, I liked the pilot! The dialogue seems just a bit too witty for high school, but then again, so was the dialogue in Buffy, so I can't complain ;) They did fit quite a bit of information into one episode - I was quite impressed.

I remain amused by the trope of girls chopping off their hair after they lose their innocence ;)

Haha, I know -- at least we didn't get the obligatory scissors-tears-and-bathroom-sink scene.

But oh so delicious...

1. I don't think I need to say that I give a hearty "Word" to all the above.

2. My DVDs have shipped from Amazon. Yay! As soon as I rewatch a little of it and see the extras, they're going to be loaned to my ex-roommate, who I think will love it. I'm sharing the love.
